AHIP and carrier certification

Certification is an every-year cycle: AHIP first, then each carrier’s module, then state appointments, all before the Annual Enrollment Period opens October 15.

01

AHIP

AHIP’s Medicare training covers Medicare basics, marketing rules and fraud, waste and abuse. Carriers require a current plan-year certificate for Medicare Advantage and Part D. The course and exam are online at ahipmedicaretraining.com; the new plan year opens in late June. Topflight agents use the discounted link on the Agent Toolkit. Some carriers accept the NABIP alternative; check the carrier.

02

Carrier certifications

After AHIP, each carrier’s own annual certification opens in its agent portal (product training and a test). AHIP results transmit to most carriers automatically once you link your AHIP account to the carrier. Keep a list: the Agent Toolkit’s 2027 Certification Tracker is built for that.

03

State appointments

Certification lets you sell; the appointment lets you sell in a state. Carriers appoint you per state through your upline. Topflight’s rule of thumb: adding a state to a Medicare Advantage carrier takes a minimum of 3 days and up to a week.

04

ACA agents

Marketplace agents complete CMS’s Federally-facilitated Marketplace registration and training every plan year at cms.gov. Agents in the 22 state-based exchange states also need that state’s certification; the ACA Command Center lists each one.

Frequently asked

Questions agents ask about AHIP and carrier certification

When does AHIP open each year?

Late June for the following plan year. Complete it before carrier certifications, which open through the summer.

Do I have to retake AHIP every year?

Yes. Carriers require the current plan year’s certificate for Medicare Advantage and Part D.

Does a carrier certification cover every state?

No. Certification lets you sell the product; a state appointment through your upline lets you sell it in that state.

What do ACA agents need?

Annual CMS Marketplace registration and training, plus the state’s own certification in the 22 state-based exchange states.
